The show has a high production value and feels like pure cinema which effortlessly supports the gritty tone of the narrative. ![]() The writing and directorial style maintains a consistency and an integrity throughout. ![]() The effect seems to be a sort of auteur-like approach to television, which we seldom see in the medium. Just as Nic Pizzolatto took on the daunting task of writing all eight episodes, Fukunaga directed the entire series. Director Cary Fukunaga is an essential part of what makes the first season of True Detective some of the greatest eight hours of television ever made.
